The term “Necrotourism” refers to getting to know cemeteries, tombs, mausoleums and etc, abroad in new cities you visit. You might gave this interest due to their architecture, Art, sculptures, or even because there are iconic figures of history, literature, music and so on.

Would you be interested in doing that?
Would you be able to walk normally around graves?

When I first got into this, I wasn’t even aware it was a practice. When I travelled to Venice in March 2011, I got to know there is an island called San Michele which is taken entirely by a cemetery. I took a ferry there and went exploring, and what a peaceful place away from tourists and Carnival celebrations.

PT/ O termo “Necrotourism” refere-se a conhecer cemitérios, túmulos, mausoléus e etc, no estrangeiro, em novas cidades a visitar. Você pode ter esse interesse devido a sua arquitetura, arte, esculturas, ou mesmo porque há figuras icônicas da história, literatura, música e assim por diante.

Quando me envolvi nisso, eu nem estava sabia de que era uma prática. Quando viajei para Veneza em março de 2011, eu fiquei sabendo que há uma ilha chamada San Michele, que é totalmente tomada por um cemitério. Eu fui de barco até lá para explorar, e que um lugar tranquilo, longe dos turistas e celebrações de Carnaval!

After this first experience, I planned another trip but now to Paris. In my list of places to visit was the Pantheon, where Rousseau, Voltaire, Lois Braille (yes, the inventor of Braille writing!), Victor Hugo, Marie Curie and other’s mausoleums were. I felt really excited to “meet” some inspirational people in such magnificent building. Paris’ most famous cemetery is called “Cemetiere Du Pere Lachaise” where is also a great concentration of famous people buried, such as: Alfred de Musset (one of my favourite poets), Jim Morrison (The Doors), Joseph Spiess (Zeppelin’s creator), Oscar Wilde and others. The cemetery is quite big and you would need to buy its map to find the people you are interested in paying a visit. There I felt like I was in an open air museum.

PT/ Após esta primeira experiência, eu planejei outra viagem, mas agora à Paris. Na minha lista de lugares para visitar estava o Panteão, onde Rousseau, Voltaire, Lois Braille (sim, o inventor da escrita Braille!), Victor Hugo, Marie Curie entre outros mausoléus. Eu me senti muito animada por “encontrar” algumas pessoas inspiradoras em um edifício magnífico. Mais famoso cemitério Paris é chamado de “Cemetiere Du Pere Lachaise”, onde há também uma grande concentração de pessoas famosas enterradas, tais como: Alfred de Musset (um dos meus poetas favoritos), Jim Morrison (The Doors), Joseph Spiess (criador do Zeppelin ), Oscar Wilde e outros. O cemitério é muito grande e você precisa comprar o seu mapa para encontrar as pessoas que te interessam visitar. Lá eu senti como se estivesse em um museu a céu aberto.

Every time I would plan a new trip, I would check that city has any cemetery that will interest me for its beauty or if there is someone if particular that is worth a visit.

In Dublin, I have been Glasnevin Cemetery, the most Celtic one in town.

PT/ Toda vez que eu iria planejar uma nova viagem, gostaria de verificar que cidade tem qualquer cemitério que vai me interessar por sua beleza ou se há alguém se particular que é a pena uma visita.

Em Dublin, eu fui ao Glasnevin Cemetery, o mais Céltico na cidade.

In Prague I also visited the Old Jewish Cemetery. It is very peculiar the way the graves are crowded in a quite small area.

PT/ Em Praga eu também visitei o Antigo Cemitério Judeu. É bastante peculiar a forma que os túmulos lotam um espaço relativamente pequeno.

In Florence I went to an English Cemetery, for some reason a lot of English people died in Florence. This is something I wouldn’t notice unless visiting this cemetery in particular.

PT/  Em Florença, fui a um Cemitério Inglês, por algum motivo, um monte de ingleses morreram em Florença. Isto é algo que eu não iria notar a menos que visitasse este cemitério em particular.

When I went to Athens, even with so many historic places to visit, I went away from the Historic Town Centre and got to know a different side of the city by going to the largest and oldest cemetery there. It has a little gallery where they preserve original burials, they give you a map with information on particular graves and I found a very peculiar animal there, a turtle!

PT/  Quando eu fui para Atenas, mesmo com tantos lugares históricos para visitar, me distanciei do Centro Histórico e conheci um lado diferente da cidade, indo para o maior e mais antigo cemitério lá. Ele tem uma pequena galeria onde eles preservam esculturas originais, te dão um mapa com informações sobre certos túmulos e eu encontrei um animal muito peculiar lá, uma tartaruga!

Most recently in Budapest I visited a cemetery to again get to know a bit more about the country’s culture. There I felt the Soviet Communism presence with the Labor Movement Mausoleum. The most famous cemetery in Budapest is divided into sections as for artist’s, musician’s. There can be found National and International know personalities like the poet Attila József.
There we noticed how many people had Salad as a common name or surname.

PT  Mais recentemente, em Budapeste, visitei um cemitério para novamente conhecer um pouco mais sobre a cultura do país. Senti a presença do Comunismo Soviético com o Mausoléu Movimento do Trabalho. O cemitério mais famoso em Budapeste é dividido em seções como por artistas, músicos. Lá pode ser encontrado personalidades Nacionais e Internacionais assim como o poeta Attila József.
Notamos quantas pessoas tinham Salad como um nome ou sobrenome comum.

In Vienna I wanted to pay a special visit to Beethoven and Mozart in Zentralfriedhof Cemetery which is situated in an outer district of Simmering, even though its name means central cemetery. It is the biggest cemetery in Vienna. It is very peculiar as it has a Buddhist burial section, Muslim, Protestant, Russian Orthodox, Military and so on. I would need a few more visits to Vienna to get to know all these sections.

PT/ Em Viena, eu queria visitar em especial a Beethoven e Mozart no Cemitério Zentralfriedhof, que está situado numa área exterior de Simmering, mesmo que seu nome significa cemitério central. É o maior cemitério em Viena. É muito peculiar, pois tem uma seção de sepulturas budista, muçulmana, protestante, ortodoxa russa, militar e assim por diante. Eu precisaria de mais algumas visitas a Viena para conhecer todas essas seções.
